Walk as Jesus Walked
Devotional by: John Rusten
“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” ~ 1 John 2:6
One of my roles in life is to be a dad to my son, Graeme, which has truly been a blessing to me. As I continue to observe life with my son it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he naturally takes on my mannerisms and characteristics—both the good and the bad.
Have you recently had one of those moments where you realized you become like the people in your life?
In this passage, John, one of Jesus’ disciples, reminds the reader that those who follow Jesus are to “walk in the same way in which he walked.” John is talking about Jesus’ character, his words and deeds. We walk as Jesus walked by practicing the spiritual disciplines, like spending time in prayer, studying Scripture, living in community with other believers, serving, and sharing the gospel with others.
To do what Jesus did is hard. Even opening this devotional today may have been hard for you. Take heart, because Jesus continues to richly bless us. He sends us his Holy Spirit. This Holy Spirit dwells in our soul, working on our heart and mind to transform us to be like him.
When we pursue Jesus we will personify Jesus. When we walk as he walked, the character of Christ—the fruit of the Spirit—will become increasingly evident in our lives. And as Paul says in regard to the fruit of the Spirit, “…against such things there is no law” (Gal. 5:23). Let us pursue Jesus this day and every day.
